You technically can't get parts for them unless you're lucky. My uptime is 58 days and I think that was our big power loss where even the UPSes let go.īoth machines are "obsolete" and thus, unrepairable by Apple standards. (I currently have 115 Chrome processes running.and it's snappy.) I live mostly in a world of open source software or software I created, so I don't care if Adobe (or whomever) quits supporting it. Google keeps pushing ChromeOS updates, so I'm comfortable using it for browsing. Since I'm not immersed in the Apple ecosystem, I don't care about mail and cal and such, but I'd like to still get security fixes.

Machines of 10+ years are often fine machines - if your expectations are set correctly - but Apple refusing to keep pushing security updates to the "antique" systems can make them a bit uncomfortable in some situations. The thing to be aware of is that Apple is aggressively shortening the life expectancy of MacOS. Sure, my M1 will outperform it but the machine doesn't feel BAD, even though I flip between both in a day. I work off and on on my 2012 (!) iMac of those approximate specifications. I'm pretty clueless with processors/OS etc after about 2008 so any guidance would be greatly appreciated! My main concern is whether they will be sluggish or not, and realise my budget isn't massive.Īpple iMac 27-inch Retina 5K 32GB Ram 1TB Fusion 3.5 GHz Quad-Core i5 VGC, Late 2014 Model.Ģ) Apple Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon 3.7GHz 2013 256GB SSD 32GB RAM Space Grey A1481 I've seen the below specs of two examples in my price range, if anyone can give me an idea if there are any key benefits to either/issues to be aware of with these models? The compactness of an iMac is ideal however I'm prioritising performance/longevity so can get a monitor setup if needed. I will also likely do a bit of video editing (nothing major) and streaming. Its not super demanding stuff however I'd much rather underutilise a computer than be wishing it had better performance. My budget is limited £350ish, and I'm planning to use lightroom/other editing apps for editing film photos that I'm scanning in. I'm planning to ditch my windows 10 laptop which is a bit slow at times for either a used Mac Pro or iMac.

Had a G3 back in the day and now moving back into the territory of wanting a Mac again.
